Meredith College Celebrates Alumnae Reunion Weekend 2022

By Emily Parker

Meredith College alumnae gathered on campus May 20-22, 2022, for Meredith Alumnae Reunion Weekend. More than 600 were in attendance for the weekend of events. All alumnae are invited back to campus each year, but individual classes are invited to attend a special reunion every five years.

The Class of 1972 celebrated its 50th reunion, and members were inducted into the Golden Oaks Society at a luncheon on May 20. Friday evening all classes celebrated in the courtyard and enjoyed music from the Entertainers. On Saturday, President Allen gave a State of the College address in Jones Auditorium. Saturday evening, individual classes held activities throughout Raleigh. The weekend concluded Sunday with a worship service in Jones Chapel and brunch.

Another highlight of the reunion was the celebration of alumnae and philanthropy award winners. The Meredith Alumnae Association and the Office of Institutional Advancement presented the following 2020 and 2022 alumnae and philanthropy awards during Alumnae Reunion Weekend.

Recently, Pace began work as a research scientist at Metabolon in Morrisville, N.C., in the Research and Development Department.

Betsy Porter Fritschel, ’77, is supportive of Meredith College in every possible way — from her generous fiscal investments and service on the Meredith Board of Trustees to her involvement in alumnae events and efforts in recruiting prospective students. Fritschel’s strong affiliation and participation are a family tradition. Her mother, Joyce Thomas Porter, graduated in 1947, her daughter, Julia Fritschel, graduated in 2019, and her niece, Sarah Porter, graduated in 2020.

Fritschel, her husband Scott, and her family are credited for funding and supporting the Joyce Thomas Porter, ’47, Memorial Fashion Merchandising and Design Study Abroad Endowment in memory of her late mother. They also support the Nutrition, Health and Human Performance Department Fund, which supplies new cooking materials and equipment for the Nutrition Lab. Jeannette Scott, ’54

Jeannette Scott, ’54

Meredith Memorial Philanthropy Award

After Jeannette Scott graduated from Meredith in 1954, she worked for the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Richmond, Va. When she had the opportunity to work with the Nigerian Baptist Mission at Ibadan in 1957, she seized it. Eventually, her calling to missionary service brought her back stateside where she could prepare herself for the mission field. By the time she graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity in 1964, the Foreign Mission Board no longer allowed single women to serve as missionaries. With her calling and dream unfulfilled, Scott continued on in the job she had as a student at the seminary and spent her entire career as manager of the bookstore at Southeastern.

When Scott passed away in April of 2019, Meredith learned that she had given her entire estate to the College – the one place that celebrated her intellect and gave her the courage and confidence to dream. Her legacy is now forever a part of Meredith, and she will not be forgotten.

Scott’s generous estate funded the Jeannette Scott/Hocutt Family Scholarship Endowment, which provides financial support for undergraduate students who are daughters of farmers, teachers, and/or ministers. The remaining portion of her gift will provide funds to renovate and enhance Jones Chapel to better serve the campus community.

Chris Speight Brown, ’76

Chris Speight Brown, ’76

Meredith Philanthropy Award

Chris Speight Brown, ’76, demonstrates the foresight to create new and worthy opportunities for future generations of women at Meredith.

Brown along with her sister, Elizabeth Speight Cooley, and her brother, Robert (Bobby) W. Speight, Jr., established the Mary Estes Speight Endowment, in honor of their mother, Mary Estes Speight, ’53, for whom education was a priority. Meredith College Athletics also received a gift from the Speight family, including Brown’s daughter Lisa Brown De Armas, ’03, to name the locker room in Weatherspoon Athletic Center in memory of their mother and grandmother.

Brown has chosen to spearhead a conscious effort of women investing in other women to succeed in the athletic arena. Brown’s actions signal a broader gender balance occurring worldwide, one in which women are naming campus facilities. This balance suggests to young women that there is a path for them in athletics, philanthropy, and business achievement. Brown’s most recent gift will name the new Estes-Speight Family Athletic Complex that will house softball, tennis, and golf. Her support of Meredith Athletics acknowledges the role athletics play in imparting lessons of competition, teamwork, discipline, and leadership.

In addition to her financial support for the College, Brown is active within the Alumnae Association.  She regularly attends and assists with Charleston, S.C., area events, campus events, and Alumnae Reunion Weekend.

Betsy Best Phillips, ’71, ’86, ’89 (MBA)

Betsy Best Phillips, ’71, ’86, ’89 (MBA)

Meredith Philanthropy Award

Betsy Best Phillips is unique in that she has three degrees from Meredith – 1971 (art), 1986 (business), and 1989 MBA. Phillips’ desire to help Meredith and her investments in Meredith have taken different forms.

As a property manager by profession and founder of Best Commercial Properties, Phillips has funded essential items that Meredith needed, such as bathroom upgrades in Belk Dining Hall in 2007 and a lightboard for the Studio Theater in 2015. To help Meredith maintain our older buildings, Phillips established a facilities endowment to create a perpetual stream of revenue for facilities. Additionally, Phillips’ passion for travel and her enjoyment of the Meredith Alumnae and Friends Travel Program inspired her to support study abroad. Initially, she supported the Sansepolcro Current Student Fund, which provides financial support for current students to study abroad in Sansepolcro, Italy. She has recently established the Betsy Best Phillips Global Scholars Endowment, which will provide full or partial funding to allow need-based students the opportunity to study abroad for a full semester. Phillips’s wish to open the world through international study and travel will be a transformational experience for qualifying students. Phillips is, indeed, a Meredith Angel.
