Making an Impact

Estes-Speight Family Names Athletic Complex

By Emily Parker

Chris Speight Brown, ’76, is passionate about the positive effects athletics have on student-athletes at Meredith College. Brown has recently given a $1 million gift that will name the Estes-Speight Family Athletic Complex. It will include athletic training space for softball, tennis, and golf, along with a student lounge and meeting room.

Meredith College reunions are a time-honored tradition, and classes celebrate together every five years in May. It is a time for them to reconnect, enjoy time together, hear from President Allen at the State of the College address, and have class meetings. The Office of Alumnae Relations takes great pride in putting together a fun weekend for all to enjoy.

When classes celebrate their 50th reunion, they mark the occasion by making a significant gift to their alma mater.

Meredith Mayhem is in full swing. Alumnae, you have two more weeks to help your class win the competition. Meredith Mayhem runs from Alumnae Reunion Weekend through June 30. On Giving Day, we focused on reaching a monetary goal, and not only did we reach it, we far exceeded it this year, raising $1.1 million. But Meredith Mayhem is not about the amount of money raised; it is about class participation. Remember all gifts during the fiscal year count toward class participation goals. The classes with the most donors in each decade will win the competition.

Endowing a Gift Lasts Forever

By Emily Parker

Cathy Smith Marion, ’03, says her father would be so proud of her for completing her degree, an opportunity he did not have as one of 11 children. He was her inspiration to name a $25,000 general scholarship endowment, the Smith-Marion Scholarship Endowment. This endowment will help any student at Meredith College who needs financial support with the first scholarship being awarded in fall 2022.
